My wife Cheryl was born and raised in Boston, MA. Well for those of you who know the area she was actually born and raised in Charlestown which is “Boston proper” as I’ve been told many many times.
I had been to Boston a couple of times over the years and enjoyed it, always thoughts it was a pretty cool town but nothing to write home about. Then I started dating Cheryl.
Since that fateful day I have been to Boston half a dozen times and got to see so much more of Boston then I ever saw before.
3 Reasons to visit Boston
#1 Boston Breweries
If you like craft beer, you’re absolutely going to love Boston. Some of the best beer I’ve ever had is in that area.
- Harpoon Brewery
- Lord Hobo Brewing
- Trillium Brewing
- And half a dozen others at least
Absolutely amazing, amazing beer. Even if you don’t like craft beer, you should still if you get up there, go visit the Samuel Adams Brewing Company. They do tours and they’re considered by a lot of people to be the father of the craft beer industry, or grandfather whatever you want to say so it’s definitely worth doing a tour. They also have a bunch of beers that they don’t release outside of the the New England area. So if you’re not from that area, there’s a bunch of stuff that they have that is definitely worth trying.
#2 Boston Food
They’re known for their seafood, their lobster, New England clam chowder, etc.. Some of the best seafood I’ve ever had. Actually the number one recommendation that I have for you is not even seafood! Go to Mike’s pastry in the north end. There cannoli is hands down the best I’ve ever had. And I’ve had good ones in Philly and in New York and a lot of different places but theirs is probably the best I’ve ever had.
For amazing new clam chowder you want to go to Legal Seafood over in the theater district. They have won lots of awards for the chowder and it was really, really good. I’m not a huge chowder fan, but definitely worth a try.
For lobster, if you get over to Fenway and we’ll talk about Fenway in a minute, but if you’re going over Fenway Eventide oyster company has a location right there. I don’t remember if it’s in Fenway Park or if it’s right near it, but their lobster roll is to die for. Absolutely amazing.
Let’s see what else fish & chips, fish & chips is one of my favorite foods. Check out Matt Murphy’s pub. Amazing fish & chips and definitely worth a visit
#1 Boston History
They’ve got Fenway park, the Boston Tea Party Museum, the USS Constitution, Beacon Hill, the Freedom Trail, a Holocaust Memorial. Faneuil Hall, MIT, Harvard, Boston College, Boston University and a dozen other colleges.
Salem, MA is only like 30 miles away. Obviously this is where the Salem witch trials took place. There is a museum, a couple of decent breweries and some decent restaurants as well. As far as the witch trials go they have memorials set up and you can actually take a tour where the tour guide tells you what happened and what brought it about and you can walk through the gravestones. It’s It’s really cool. And if you really like Halloween, you should get there around Halloween.
We were there by accident maybe two weeks before Halloween and we were walking around and I’ve never ever seen so many witches and warlocks and you know costumes and people walking around and they had you know, a witches contest and it was that people really, really get into Halloween up there.
Oh, I almost forgot about Cheers! If you are old enough to remember that TV show the actual bar where they filmed the outside is in Boston. It’s not right in downtown, I want to say 10 or 15 minute walk away. Once you go inside it doesn’t look anything like the bar in the show, it’s very tiny, it’s a cool place to go and have a drink and show you where they are kind of thing but it you know, don’t think you’re gonna walk in and sit down and see Norm sitting at the end of the bar.
If you’re a casino goer, they now have a Wynn casino called Encore. I haven’t been yet but I hear it’s beautiful inside. Just don’t be surprised by the prices of things there.
I know I’ve left a bunch of stuff out. So if you’ve ever been to Boston and there’s something that I missed, you know, a favorite bar yours or an eatery or you know something I missed historically, feel free to comment.
