So I was thinking about what to write about today. I decided that because I’m itching to travel so much that I wanted to talk about one of my all time favorite trips: Key West!
And why Key West is is one of my favorite destinations ever!
Cheryl and I had the opportunity to go December of 2018 so give or take 3 years ago now. I think it was five days four nights and absolutely fell in love with the area, with the people and the atmosphere. The overall vibe of the place was a combination of laid back, party central and just plain fun.
3 reasons why I love Key West
#3 The History and Culture
The Hemingway Home, The Little White House, The Coast Guard Cutter Ingham, Dry Tortugas National Park and so much more.
If you’ve never taken a tour of that ship or or any military ship you should definitely take a tour of it. It was actually quite funny, we’re walking around and Cheryl knew that I was in the Navy and that I was stationed on the aircraft carrier USS Constellation but she had no idea what the living conditions were really like. Yes a Coast Guard cutter and an aircraft carrier are very different just in sheer size.
So we walked through the birthing area, I’m sorry the sleeping area, and Cheryl got to see a coffin rack and you know that the our mattresses were literally an inch thick and it blew her away. That’s how I lived for three years, you get used to it. It was very entertaining watching her response.
#2 Key West Sunsets
This is what everybody thinks of when they think of Key West, and yes they truly are amazing. So yes, if you’ve never been there, go to Mallory square grab yourself a pina colada or a beer, grab a seat and enjoy. There are a couple other places that we went on different days that had the really cool sunset as well without dealing with the “interesting people” you get at Mallory Square
#1 Nightlife
Well, first, they’ve got two breweries in town, Waterfront Brewery and First Flight Island Restaurant & Brewery. They have two distilleries in town, Key West First Legal Rum Distillery and Papa’s Pilar Rum Distillery. Actually, I believe the my friend Tommy would be able to tell me for sure, but I think that the Key West First Legal rum distillery is the oldest distillery in the US but go you can do a tour
There are 43 bars and restaurants on and or near Duval Street which is only a little over a mile long. Lots of very different kinds of bars: Irish pubs, watering holes, dueling pianos, country bars, dance clubs, and on and on.
So pretty much anything you want. It’s just it’s a really cool place. You can go and you can just kick back and relax on the beach and enjoy the sunset and drink a pina colada or you can go party your butt off and you know hear live music until 2 or 3 in the morning. It’s a lot of fun.
If you have not been yet definitely worth the trip. We flew from Philly down to Miami, grabbed a rental car and we drove the four hours down the Overseas Highway.
You can also fly directly into Key West International. A lot of times you’re gonna have to change planes in Miami and take a little little hopper plane the rest of the way.
Or you can do what I talked about last week when I was talking about Fort Myers and flying to Fort Myers and then take the Key West Express from Fort Myers down.
I do have to say that driving the Overseas Highway was really cool driving because you’re literally at some points10 to 20 feet above the ground. It was mile after mile after mile of nothing but blue ocean.
But anyway, enough rambling. If you’ve been to Key West, and I forgot to mention something that’s important. Leave a comment, you know, let me know where what I should have talked about or what I missed or if I was inaccurate.
Anyway, hope everybody’s safe and sound and have a great night. See ya.
